    Peoria, IL

    Nestled along the Illinois River, Peoria is the oldest European settlement in Illinois. Ever since the city was founded in 1691, residents have treasured their Peoria homes. The actual city of Peoria has a population of 115,007 (as of 2010) and is the largest city on the Illinois River and county seat of Peoria County. The greater Peoria metropolitan area has a population of 373,590 (2011), making it the third largest metropolitan area in the state of Illinois. Only the Chicago and St. Louis areas are larger!

    Peoria is famous as a representation of the average American city because of its demographics and mainstream Midwestern culture. On the Vaudville circuit, it was said that if an act would succeed in Peoria, it would work anywhere. "Will it play in Peoria?" has now become a metaphor for whether something appeals to the American mainstream public. Many residents have enjoyed living in Peoria because of the wide variety of cultural and sports activities. 

    Peoria, Illinois is a great place to work. The city is the world headquarters for the Caterpillar Inc, one of the 30 companies composing the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Peoria also is well known for its medical facilities, home of 3 major hospitals, a Children's Hospital, and a St. Jude Affiliate. The USDA's National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research is also located in Peoria, the lab where mass production of penicillin was developed. Peoria is also known for having some of the finest education in the state of Illinois. The city even has several colleges, universities, and even a College of Medicine that is attached to the University of Illinois.
